There are a whole range of local trails and scenic routes to follow. Leaflets and information are available from the hotel. Remember too that our proximity to Cairnryan and the ferry crossing to Ireland brings a visit to Ireland within the realms of a day trip!!
The Solway Coast Heritage Trail
The Solway coastline is over 200 miles long and offers breathtaking scenery. This trail takes you on a journey across the region taking in a wealth of interesting historic places, charming villages and picturesque harbours. Starting at Annan in the east, just follow the distinctive signs with the Celtic cross, the route takes you to the Mull of Galloway Scotland’s most southerly point.
Galloway Tourist Route
Signposted from Gretna in the east or from Ayr in neighbouring Ayshire to the North West, this route gives you time to explore the quiet villages near to scenic Loch Ken (Carsphairn, St John’s town of Dalry, New Galloway, Balmaclellan and Parton) as well as the busier towns of Castle Douglas, Dalbeattie ,Dumfries and Annan. The whole route is 96 miles however there are plenty of places to stop along the way
Burns Heritage Trail
This circular trail takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Scotland. Robert Burns lived most of his short life in Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway, and his work was inspired by the land he loved, as well as by the women he wooed. The trail takes you on a journey through Burns’ life, from his birthplace in Alloway to his grave in Dumfries. Visit the small towns and villages along the way like Kirkcudbright Artists’ Town and Wigtown Book Town and sample some of the local hospitality as well as the locally caught seafood, fresh from the Solway Firth
South West 300 Touring Route
The South West Coastal 300 touring route is a stunning drive of just over 300 miles, located through Dumfries & Galloway and Ayrshire, the quieter corner of Scotland. It includes the most Southerly point in Scotland as well as the highest village, in the Lowther Hills. It takes in stunning coastline, hills, glens, forests and lochs. Being a circular route it does not matter where you start from, fortunately, Knockinaam Lodge is on this route and is an ideal place to start and finish.
With many historic sites & places to see, it could take as long as you want it to.
Take in Portpatrick, Lendlefoot, up the Ayrshire Coast to Culzean Castle & Alloway, Sanquhar, Warnlockhead, the highest village, over to the Solway coast, Kippford, Kircudbright (artists town), and Mull of Galloway…
