Discovering the Bard - 2 night break

Discovering the Bard - 2 night break

January is when Scots and those with an affiliation to Scotland celebrate the life and works of Robert Burns, one of Scotland’s most well know and influential characters. Born on 25th January in Ayrshire, Burns moved to Dumfriesshire where he wrote many of his famous works. Knockinaam Lodge sits to the west of Dumfries & Galloway, not too far from Ayrshire making the hotel a perfect base to discover The Bard

Travelling north, your journey of discovery begins before you reach Knockinaam by taking a detour off the A75 and following the Solway Coast route that brings you to Brow Well, the spot where Robert Burns bathed in the restorative waters. Travel to Dumfries for a wealth of Burns history to discover. Walk in his footsteps as you take a peek in at The Globe Inn, frequently visited by Burns. His chair still resides there, and maybe his spirit too! You can take refreshment here or carry on to the Robert Burns Centre, which is a museum within a house where he once lived in the town

A revisit to Dumfries, at the end of your stay is recommended to head out to Auldgirth to see Ellisland Farm.  See inside the house that Burn built in 1788 and the first home he and his family had together. The farm has one of the world’s most important collections of Burns treasures. It is set in an idyllic spot, giving you a true sense of how nature inspired him. Back into Dumfries you round off your Burns discovery by visiting his final resting place at the Burns Mausoleum

During your stay discover more about the life of Robert Burns by enjoying a day out to Alloway in Ayrshire, Robert Burns Birthplace Museum & House. The Bachelors’ Club, a famous meeting place for Burns and his friends to debate and enjoy a Scottish jig is just a 10-minute drive away from here and nearby is Souter Johnnie’s Cottage – the home of the shoemaker in the lively Tam O’Shanter poem. We also recommend a visit to the nearby Whisky Experience Shop, or to the Souter Inn Pub also in Kirkoswald

To continue the Burns theme and celebration of our Scottish traditions and rituals, dining at Knockinaam will include hints of traditional Scottish cuisine. Your 2 night stay includes dinner each evening and a full Scottish breakfast to set you up for your day of Burns culture in two of the most beautiful regions of Scotland
