July at Knockinaam

July is generally the warmest month of the year here at Knockinaam and a busy and exciting time to visit both the hotel and the wider area. The school holidays start and there’s lots of exciting activities for families nearby including paddle boarding and kayaking at Stranraer. Children go free across the month in our Hannay with Croft family suite – full details below.

It’s an equally exciting time in the kitchen as the team experiment with the very best ingredients from our kitchen garden, combining home-grown ingredients with seasonal local produce and Scottish seafood. There’s also a number kids options.

We’re delighted to share the news we are now a Living Wage Accredited Employer too.

What’s growing?

We’ve already been making strawberry jam for guests to enjoy due to the amount of strawberries we have been harvesting. We have redcurrants, white currants, blackcurrants, rhubarb, raspberries, artichokes, horseradish, 5 types of garlic, 3 types of onions, 4 types of potato, peas, broad beans, runner beans, French climbing beans x 2 types, florence fennel, beetroot, chard, spinach, tomatillo (2 types of heritage variety of physalis) 8 types of tomatoes, cucumber, salad, carrots cauliflower and broccoli.

Flavours of the month

Every Saturday lunchtime we run our popular Big Green Egg BBQ rolling menu, for both residents and non-residents. Options include sumptuous West Coast Tandoori Monkfish, Knockinaam Paella and butterflied leg of Galloway Lamb flavoured with Chimichurri – all served with garden salads & hot garden potatoes with best butter and homemade bread and a delicious pudding.

Guests staying with us during July can look forward to a wonderful array of seasonal delights such as Yellow tomato gazpacho with a Portpatrick crab salad, Blackcurrant Souffle with a Blackcurrant leaf sorbet, Roast Strawberries with a pink peppercorn syrup and Iced Cappuccino of Broad beans, Garden peas & Mint.

Signature Dish: Steamed Knockinaam Courgette Flower with a Chicken & Basil Mousse, Madeira foam, chive oil

Things to do

We have fantastic beaches around here and Stranraer Watersports Association offers paddle board hire, kayaking, powerboating, sailing and coastal rowing. Nearby Golden Sands Trekking Centre at Sandhead has some great activities for visitors including hacks on the beach, alpaca walks and a petting farm for the younger ones.

We have a great local company called Westbys Electric Bike Hire that deliver out to us – this is great for our hill and they offer routes in the local area including a Lighthouse route. There’s various outdoor games, buckets & spades and fishing nets for traditional rock pooling in our own private cove at Knockinaam too.

Booking & availability

Throughout July, we are offering £100 off all 2 night stays and £200 off all 3 night stays and kids go free in Hannay & Croft, our 2 room family suite. This offer would include High Tea and Breakfast for the children and normal rate for parents in Hannay. We will extend the offer to additional children to go to Logan Fish Pond with the voucher system (which is for a stay of 2 nights or more).
